A baby's sleep environment is an important part of creating a safe and comfortable home. While parents naturally want to make their baby's sleeping area soft and cosy, some common items can actually create unnecessary risks.
Understanding a few basic safe-sleep principles can help parents create a better environment for their little one.
1. Choose a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing babies on a firm, flat and non-inclined sleep surface designed for infant sleep.
The mattress should fit properly within the approved sleep product, with no gaps around the edges.
2. Always Place Baby on Their Back
For every sleep, babies should be placed on their backs.
This recommendation applies to both nighttime sleep and naps.
Parents should also make sure everyone who cares for the baby understands the same safe-sleep routine.
3. Keep the Sleep Area Clear
A baby's sleep space should be kept simple.
Avoid placing loose items such as:
- Pillows
- Quilts
- Comforters
- Soft toys
- Loose blankets
- Mattress toppers
- Other soft objects
in the baby's sleep area. The AAP recommends keeping the sleep surface clear except for a fitted sheet.
4. Consider Room-Sharing
The AAP recommends that babies sleep in the same room as their parents, but on a separate sleep surface designed for infants, ideally for at least the first six months.
This allows parents to remain close to their baby without sharing the same sleeping surface.
5. Avoid Overheating
Babies don't need to be heavily covered to sleep comfortably. Parents should dress babies appropriately for the room temperature and avoid excessive layers.
A comfortable and uncluttered sleep environment is preferable to adding lots of blankets or soft bedding.
6. Know the Difference Between Baby Gear and Sleep Products
Strollers, swings, carriers and car seats can be useful for everyday activities, but they are not intended to replace a proper infant sleep surface.
The AAP specifically advises against routine sleep in sitting devices such as swings, strollers, infant carriers and car seats.
Simple Habits Can Make a Difference
Creating a safe sleep environment doesn't have to be complicated. Start with the basics: baby on their back, a firm and flat sleep surface, and a clear sleep area.
These simple habits can help parents create a safer space for their little ones while building good routines from the beginning.
